9th UfM Climate Change Expert Group meeting

Last Friday, I had the rare privilege of standing alongside my esteemed colleague, Cristina Costa i Coromina, representing the Global Shapers Community Mediterranean Hubs at the 9th Union for the Mediterranean Climate Change Expert Group meeting. This event offered a golden opportunity to underscore the critical role of grassroots movements in grappling with the climate issues faced by the Mediterranean region. More than ever, we need a joint effort to overcome these challenges, and this forum provided the perfect platform to articulate this need.

The Global Shapers Community Mediterranean Hubs, a collective that comprises 12 hubs spanning Alexandria, Barcelona, Casablanca, East Jerusalem, Florence, Genoa, Naples, Nice, Ramallah, Palermo, Tanger, and Tripoli, is a testament to the profound impact that young leaders can make when they combine their strengths. With the Mediterranean being among the world's major climate change hotspots, the initiative is devoted to harnessing the aggregate expertise, resources, and networks of its members. The goal? To ideate and bring to life innovative solutions that bring about positive social, economic, and environmental transformations.

During our address, we spotlighted numerous projects taken up by the Global Shapers hubs in the Mediterranean region, showing how grassroots initiatives can significantly influence raising awareness, building capacity, and propelling climate action. These projects are living proof that we can be architects of the changes we wish to see in the world.

This involvement underlines the critical role that cross-generational and intergenerational dialogue plays in tackling the pressing challenges that we face today. As Cristina and I echoed in our address, "The fight against climate change is a shared responsibility." It is a duty that we owe to ourselves, to each other, and most importantly, to future generations.

And so, I extend an invitation to you. Join us in supporting our Global Shapers Mediterranean initiative as we strive to create a sustainable and resilient Mediterranean region for future generations. In unity, we have the power to shape the course of our world. Each one of us can contribute to this fight against climate change. Let's leverage this power for the collective good.
