Casa Arabe: Alternatives for youth participation in the sociopolitical landscape of the MENA region

I recently had the honour of participating in a conference organized by Casa Árabe and the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation alongside three brilliant young leaders from across the MENA region. Our shared passion for sociopolitical reform and commitment to improving our societies was not only inspirational but also reinforced my belief in the power of youth and its potential for change.

Coming from Libya, a country that has seen significant political and social upheaval, I am no stranger to the challenges facing our society, particularly regarding youth engagement. Our youths desire change but often find their paths blocked by traditional structures and limitations. Therefore, our mission has been to build bridges and create alternative pathways for youth participation in our country's sociopolitical landscape.

One exciting way we are doing this is by harnessing the transformative power of technology. With the growing digitalization of our world, we see immense opportunities to use technology as a tool for civic activism. One of our notable initiatives is developing an online platform for open dialogues and discussions on sociopolitical issues. This platform allows our youth to voice their concerns, share their ideas, and engage in constructive debates - crucial for democratic participation.

In addition to promoting dialogue, we are utilizing technology to enhance the political literacy of our young citizens. Through online workshops, webinars, and educational materials, we aim to empower youth with the knowledge and skills they need to understand and navigate the complex political landscape.

Moreover, we are exploring ways to leverage technology for economic and social development. This includes facilitating youth-led entrepreneurial initiatives, fostering innovation in key sectors, and strengthening the digital infrastructure in our rural and marginalized communities. By doing so, we are working to create a more inclusive and equitable society where all our citizens can thrive.

At the conference, I had the chance to share these initiatives and learn from the experiences of my peers in Morocco, Palestine, and Lebanon. Our discussions were enriching and filled with innovative ideas, reinforcing my belief in the potential of youth and the pivotal role we play in shaping our societies.

However, as we journey towards a more participative and inclusive society, we must not forget the importance of collaboration and solidarity. As young leaders, we need to support and learn from each other, building on our shared experiences to drive sustainable change.

The path to democratic participation and social reform is fraught with challenges, but I remain hopeful. Seeing our youth's passion and resilience and willingness to engage and drive change gives me confidence in a better future. We are not just the leaders of tomorrow; we are the agents of change today.

Through technology, we are revolutionizing the way our youth participate in the sociopolitical landscape of Libya, creating a new narrative of civic activism and setting a precedent for other countries in the MENA region to follow.

To all the young people reading this: Your voice matters. Your ideas are valid. You are the change this world needs, and I am proud to be a part of this journey with you.
