Empowering Libya's Digital Future: Reflections from the Africa IGF 2023
This week marked a significant milestone in the journey towards a more connected and digitally empowered Africa. I had the honor of attending the Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) 2023 in Abuja, Nigeria, an event that brought together some of the brightest minds in the realm of Internet governance. The forum was a vibrant display of dedication and expertise aimed at shaping the future of the Internet across our continent.
One of the core themes of the forum was the power of collaboration. The African proverb, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together," perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the event. The digital landscape in Africa is incredibly diverse, and it is clear that only through a united effort can we unlock its full potential. The forum featured an array of discussions on crucial topics like digital inclusion and workshops on cybersecurity, each emphasizing the strength found in unity.
For Libya, this forum was particularly pertinent. We are on an ongoing journey of harnessing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for national development. However, the path is not without its challenges. Internet governance in Libya transcends the mere formulation of policies and regulations. It is fundamentally about ensuring that every citizen has access to a digital space that is free, open, and secure. We envision a digital Libya where innovation is nurtured, knowledge is freely shared, and opportunities are limitless.
The importance of appropriate governance in this context cannot be overstated. We have witnessed the harmful effects of Internet shutdowns around the world, including recent incidents in Derna. For Libya, advocating for policies that maintain uninterrupted Internet access is not just a priority but a necessity. Our aim is to ensure that every Libyan is a participant in the digital revolution, enjoying unhindered connectivity.
Reflecting on the insights gained at the Africa IGF, I am filled with both hope and determination. There's a burgeoning hope for a digitally advanced Africa and a strong determination to steer Libya's digital transformation. I call upon my fellow stakeholders, particularly those in Libya, to embrace the learnings from this forum and turn them into effective, actionable strategies.
Together, we can build a digital framework for Libya that is inclusive, with robust infrastructure and empowered citizens. The goal is a digital Libya that is not just connected, but also free, open, and inclusive. Here's to a future where digital transformation paves the way for progress and prosperity in Libya. 🇱🇾
