Reflections from SHAPE Africa 2024 in Addis Ababa
Last weekend, I had the honour of participating in SHAPE Africa 2024, a dynamic gathering hosted by the Global Shapers Community Sub-Saharan Africa in partnership with the African Union, held in Addis Ababa under the inspiring theme: “Upskilling for Africa’s Development.”
The event brought together over 200 changemakers, innovators, and thought leaders from across Africa and the world to share ideas and craft strategies for empowering youth and accelerating sustainable development on the continent. The energy and optimism in the African Union conference rooms were palpable as we engaged in dialogue about the skills, tools, and frameworks needed to propel Africa forward.
Moderating "The Future of SMEs in Africa"
I had the privilege of moderating the panel “The Future of SMEs in Africa,” joined by esteemed experts:
Diane Akuffo
Kudzai Murongazvombo, MBA
Melvyn Lubega
Together, we explored how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can become engines of innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth in Africa. Our discussion touched on:
The role of technology in enabling scale and efficiency,
The importance of education and digital skills in empowering youth entrepreneurs,
How policy frameworks can better support startups and local businesses, and
The value of pan-African collaboration in building a thriving SME ecosystem.
The conversation was filled with practical recommendations and bold ideas—reminding us that Africa’s future lies in the hands of its creative and resourceful youth.
High-Level Conversations on Libya and Africa’s Agenda
Beyond the panel, I had meaningful exchanges that deepened my commitment to advancing Libya’s place within continental dialogues. I had the pleasure of speaking with Ms. Ebba Kalondo, Spokesperson for the AU Chairperson, where we reflected on Libya-AU relations, the perceptions Libyans hold toward the AU, and the importance of continental solidarity in light of Libya’s ongoing challenges. These dialogues reinforced the need for Libya’s voice to be integrated into Africa’s development narrative.
Additionally, I met with Mr. Chido Munyati, Head of Africa at the World Economic Forum, where we discussed the WEF’s current initiatives and impact across Africa. These conversations opened new avenues for understanding how global and regional actors can align efforts for youth empowerment and digital innovation.
Celebrating Collaboration and Purpose
I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to the Global Shapers Sub-Sahara Community Manager, for her outstanding leadership in organizing this impactful gathering. The event was a testament to the power of collaborative leadership, youth-led dialogue, and pan-African solidarity.
Looking Forward: A Call for Action
SHAPE Africa 2024 reaffirmed my belief in the potential of Africa’s youth. As we move forward, we must continue to:
Prioritize skills development for the digital era,
Build resilient ecosystems that support innovation and entrepreneurship,
Promote inclusive policymaking that reflects the needs of all citizens.
The journey towards a unified, tech-driven, and inclusive Africa is one we must all take together. Let’s champion collaboration, uplift local solutions, and keep shaping the future—together.
