RightsCon 2023: Inspiring Journeys and Urgent Responsibilities

This past week, I found myself immersed in an exhilarating and humbling experience at RightsCon 2023. Nestled in the beauty of Costa Rica, the conference offered an extraordinary backdrop for intense discussions, empowered exchanges, and the creation of global connections.

The journey was not without its hardships. I embarked on a 26-hour trip, leading me to San Jose, a city renowned for its vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes. Once there, I found myself amidst a whirlwind four-day conference, each moment more enriching than the last.

The highlight of my time there, perhaps, was delivering a talk on a subject that is particularly close to my heart. Titled "Updates from Libya: The Cybercrime Law and New Restrictions in Human Rights," I found myself in the "Cyber Creep" session, grappling with the severity of a rapidly evolving landscape in Libya. The implementation of Law 05/2022 has introduced a disturbing trend of crackdowns and cyberattacks, an issue of grave concern to me and countless others.

Moreover, I was incredibly honoured to be part of the RightsCon Young Leaders Summit. This platform served as a meeting point for vibrant, passionate young leaders from around the world. We engaged in animated discussions on the emerging trends in digital rights, shared our best practices, and brainstormed collective actions to combat the challenges we face.

As I take the time to reflect on the events of the past week, I feel a surge of responsibility. A weight rests on our shoulders to take the insights, knowledge, and ideas we gleaned from the conference and use them to navigate the rapid digital transformations we are currently witnessing.

The task at hand is undeniably enormous. We are at a pivotal point in our journey, a crossroads if you will. The path we tread now is essential for the protection of human rights in the digital world. Yet, I find myself undeterred, if not emboldened, by the sheer scale of the challenge.

Armed with the learnings from the conference, the connections made, and an unwavering commitment to the cause, I am confident we can rise to the occasion. We are not alone in this. Together, we can ensure that the digital space becomes safer and more equitable.

I was there representing the annir initiative by LXFT, and I am proud to bring this message back to my team, infused with the energy and inspiration I gathered at RightsCon 2023.

We stand on the brink of change. As we navigate this complex digital terrain, let us remember our ultimate goal – ensuring the protection and respect of human rights, no matter where or how they manifest.
